I’m smiling because I thought I was out of the woods. But my butterfly said, “Not so fast, young lady. I control more than you think.”
I blinked. “We’re back at it?”
And she wiggled her wings, almost smugly. “Yes, ma’am.”
Y’all, I had to drop my head and shake it. “What now?”
“Sorry to tell you, but when I’m underactive, I also control carpal tunnel,” she said matter-of-factly.
“Carpal tunnel?”
“Yes. Hypothyroidism can lead to fluid retention, which causes swollen tissues in your wrist that press against the median nerve.”

“You’re telling me you’re the reason I wake up with my hands burning and my fingers constantly numb?”
She nodded. “Yes, ma’am. The median nerve runs through the carpal tunnel—a narrow space between the carpal bones and transverse carpal ligament—to provide sensory and motor function to the hand.”
“So, first, you take my voice when I’m a speaker and psychologist. And now my hands? I’m a Thai yoga bodywork therapist! You just want me to be lazy and sit down? What is wrong with you?”
This is how I talk to my butterfly, y’all. I need answers. If you’ve ever had a bodywork session from me, you’re probably crying laughing right now. People always tell me I have blessed hands. They want to take me home after a session because I pour my heart into making them feel better.
If my hands ever progress to a point where I can’t do the work I love, it’ll break my heart. These hands help people heal and knowing they’re at risk because of my thyroid feels like a betrayal.
But this butterfly has a big job, and I respect her. So, now I have to figure out how to care for my hands and protect my passion. My joints aren’t the best either, so I’ve adjusted. I get massages myself, hit the sauna, and cut down on the weight limits I work with. I also focus more on stretching than rubbing during sessions—it’s better for me and still effective for my clients.
And hey, one day, I plan to get married. I want to relax my husband too—these hands have more love to give!
To figure it all out, I went back to the list of symptoms. “Is this it? Tell me this is it. I’m tired, boss.”
Luckily, that’s the last big one. For now. And let me tell you, it’s enough. What do you think?
In my next blog, I’ll dive into what could have happened but didn’t, and trust me, I’m counting my blessings every day for dodging some of these bullets. I know what you’re thinking: “Girl, I thought you had it all!”
Nope. Just the major stuff. And honestly, that’s more than enough.
